2011 Jacobson Award Winner - Barry T. Katzen, MD

 

Dr. Katzen is medical director of Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, Miami, FL, and is also professor of radiology at the University of Miami, a position he has held for 23 years. He has been advancing the science and clinical practice of
vascular disease as an outstanding leader in endovascular interventions for more than 30 years, as an excellent clinician, a remarkable teacher, a dedicated investigator, and a visionary innovator.

Dr. Katzen has done much to advance the cause of endovascular interventions throughout the world. Dr. Katzen has been one who has been most willing to reach out to allied specialties to establish collaborative relationships for the improvement of patient care and the advancement of modern medicine.

Dr. Katzen pioneered many of the methods of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), and he was one of the first to popularize fibrinolytic therapy. In the 1990s, Dr. Katzen led the team involved in doing the first transhepatic intrajugular portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure in the US. He was also involved in the implementation of aortic stent grafts and has been significantly involved in prevention of stroke through his work on carotid stent therapy. He has been principal investigator on multiple carotid stent trials.

Dr. Katzen’s most unique contribution to education was pioneering the use of the “live-case” tutorial for vascular education, and it has evolved into a powerful teaching tool for procedure-oriented specialties. Dr. Katzen has contributed extensively to the scientific literature and has served in a variety of editorial positions.
