Mesenteric Artery Disease : Treatment

How is Mesenteric Artery Disease treated?

If you are diagnosed with mesenteric artery disease, your doctor—a vascular surgeon—will most likely treat it with a balloon angioplasty and stent. Surgery, usually bypass or endarterectomy, is another option reserved for healthier patients.

The bypass will reroute the blood flow, whereas an endarterectomy will surgically remove plaque from the artery. In some cases, thrombolysis may be an option. This method allows the clot to be dissolved or broken down by certain drugs.

The outcomes of these treatments are quite favorable and the results with surgery are excellent. The results with angioplasty are quite good, with some people having recurrence after two or three years.”

It is important to pursue treatment options right away, to avoid any additional complications of the disease.
